Her Story Is
HER STORY IS, a collective led by independent women writers and artists from the US and Iraq, promotes projects aimed at expanding linguistic, artistic, and cultural boundaries in response to global conflict and its aftermath, with a focus on centralizing the experience of women. HER STORY IS produces exhibitions, anthologies, scholarly articles, panel discussions, theater productions, and a semi-annual residency in the Middle East. We believe our process transforms established power structures, creates new grounds for learning, and builds a community of equals across borders.
This project is sponsored by Fort Point Theater Channel, The William Joiner Institute, and others.
In December 2017, I traveled to Dubai with three other American women artists to participate in the first HER STORY IS residency where Iraqis and Americans each led workshops, exchanged work, and began to collaborate.
My current HSI collaborations include: working with a translation team (which includes: Kirun Kapur, Dima Basha, and Amir Al-Azraki) on an anthology of contemporary poetry by Arab women writing in Arabic. Our co-translated poems have been published in Poetry Magazine, in The Common, in Consequence Magazine, and in Talking Writing Magazine.
As well, I've partnered with Iraqi women at the University of Basra to bring HSI/English-language-poetry to Arabic speaking audiences.
My future HSI plans include: organizing a Mass Humanities sponsored panel in September 2020, titled: "Her Story Is: the Effects of War on Collaborations Between Iraqi and U.S. Women Writers." As well, HSI will be organizing a virtual meet-up and workshop between Iraqi and American women artists, tentatively in December 2020. Our hope is to resume our in-person meet-ups in Dubai in 2021 (details in development).
